I just counted and there is less than 4 weeks until my first indoor triathlon event. EEEP. I’ll be honest in saying that I have not been going full force in training for this event, the reason being is that I feel like it’s more of a glorified gym workout (pool, stationary bike, treadmill) than a hardcore triathlon event. It’s still a solid hour of cardio nevertheless and also a gateway event for the outdoor summer tri’s, so I have been going to the gym on the weekends on top of my daily T25 workouts. Here’s my progress.
Pool: This is where I’ve put the most of my focus and effort in to, because you know. Water and anxiety tend to go hand in hand with me…. But I’m so so excited about the progress I’ve made in the pool. I had such shaky confidence at first and felt like I was floundering around with the lifeguard perched on her tall chair, silently judging me during my laps, but now I think I have a solid freestyle technique underway. I give 100% credit to YouTube tutorials on How To Perform a Correct Freestyle Stroke. Saved me bucks and bucks on hiring a private swim coach. I just need to work harder on biltateral breathing and get the hang of an efficient flip turn and I will be solid!
Bike: I’ve had a grand total of 2 dates with the stationary bike at the gym, and 0 dates with my real bike (too many elements out there right now. Oh, and shitty drivers. Oh, and now myriads of potholes). The result of the last bike date was my hammies were screaming in pain the next day, though I did have the resistance cranked up to about a thousand so that's why. And I secretly loved the soreness so. I don’t hate it.
Treadmill: Again, a grand total of 2 dates here. Running to me is like breathing. The first time back on the ‘mill was around 8 weeks postpartum and I cranked out 2.25 mi in 20 minutes with no issues. A far cry from my 7:30 min/mi 5k race pace I had worked up to prior to pregnancy, but I’ll take it! I’m grateful that my millions of muscle cells held on to their millions of little muscle memories and I ran on that thing like I didn’t just take almost a year off to protect my dear, oddball placenta.
Nothing too drastic, but baby steps has been the name of my training game since coming back into the world of racing events. I am looking forward to graduating from T25 in 3 weeks, hammering out this indoor tri in about 4 weeks, and then moving on to training for my “real” outdoor triathlon that I am aiming for in May.
