It's been a week since I participated in and completed the indoor triathlon. Since then, I've been eating dirty and drinking too many hard ciders and my only workout has been a sole power yoga class. Definitely let myself slide and my baby abs went away, but anyways....
The event was fab! It was very well organized, even during an unexpected fire alarm, pulled by an unknowing tot in the childcare room (thankfully not one of mine).

Here is how the race panned out....
Starting times got all messed up due to the fire alarm evacuation, so I ended up in a starting wave of just two people. Myself, and the fricken Michael Phelps of the event, I swear. This guy had lapped me three times in the pool before I even finished one length. Because THAT was the confidence boost my aquaphobic self needed, right?! At least he was easy on the eyes.
Then after my 25 pool lengths and his 43, Michael Phelps and I moved onto the cycling studio. Where of course he morphed into Lance Armstrong and pumped out some crazy amount of miles within the allotted 30 minute timeframe. I sweated a lot during cycling. A LOT. I trained for the cycling portion on a stationary bike using a set interval program, and let me tell you firsthand that this somehow does not correlate to the little red resistance knobby dial on the spin bike. If you didn't guess, I was a spin bike virgin prior to race day. I hit 10.2 miles in my 30 minutes of cycling.
Me and the Phelps-Armstrong god made our way to the treadmills. At this point I was starting to see stars from fatigue (this is what happens when you don't incorporate brick workouts into training) and my legs felt like Jello as I painfully cranked the treadmill to the 6-ish range. I hung in there and reached 2.2 miles in the allotted 20 minutes; the American-turned-Ethiopian Olympian ran like probably a marathon in 20 minutes.
Obviously I don't need to explain who was one of the top contenders of this event. Hint: I got paired up with him. I did admire his athleticism.
But with my stats:
Pool: 25 lengths in 10 minutes (not a standard sized pool however).
Bike: 10.2 miles in 30 minutes
Treadmill: 2.2 miles in 20 minutes
....I placed 8th out of the 30-40 participants in the Womens Open division. I'd count that as a killer placing given the fact I trained only on weekends for this event and did zero brick workouts (back to back workouts of swim-bike or bike-run combinations). This was just the type of event I needed to get back into the mindset of the world of racing events, and I am eagerly awaiting to see how I might be able to incorporate a solid training plan around my new job and family schedules. Aiming for an outdoor Tri this Mother's Day! Can she do it?!
And now for a conclusion that I got a chuckle out of: A few days ago, I was emailing the race coordinator to ask for the photos that were taken of me during the event. He sent them over, but I was surprised to see some photos of only my Olympian wave buddy in the mix. I shrugged it off as an error, until I later reread the opening of his email......

Let me run that one by my husband ;-) ....
Overall, I had so much fun and got some swag to add to my collection.
